The Name Says More Than You Think!
Sara Finkel's Simply Delicious is one of my favorite cookbooks. For one thing it got the name perfectly right. The book and and everything about it is Simply Delicious or in other words simple and delicious. The only better word I would think of to describe her book is the Yiddish word "Batampt".
The book and everything in it and about it is loaded with, as we say in Hebrew, "Chein", it is simply a charming book. The book is not overly glamorous and the recipes are not overly sophisticated. From the petit dimensions of the book to its simple but beautiful layout and design, this book is genuinely inviting and makes you feel good when you open it.
The book is arranged according to courses, tastefully color coded with more than fifteen sections including thee separate side dish sections and four separate dessert sections. Its pretty pictures open each section and dot the landscape throughout.
The recipes are traditional with great variations and twists. I would make just about every recipe from this book. In the introductory section Sara give insight into the connection between our Yomim Tovim and food. She then follows it up with suggested menus for each Yom Tov and even has a special Pesach section.
Sara is the author of a number of cookbooks including Classic Kosher Cooking 1. She also wrote a food column for the Yated Ne'eman for six years where she garnered a strong following. To sum up Sara and her book, when I first did artwork for her and asked her for approval she told me that her name was written much to big and that is not consistent with her style. As I became more familiar with Sara and her work I saw this in everything she did. That is what makes Sara's work so Simply Delicious.
