Shifrah Devorah Witt & Zipporah Malka Heller have just helped me answer a question I've always wondered about. What is the Jewish obsession with Chinese food? Why is it that every second Kosher restaurant in any Jewish neighborhood is Chinese? Well as I got older I found out that the food served in these restaurants is not neccassarily something a Chinese person would recognize other than by the names on the menu. It's sort of like Yiddish and German where our Heimishe way of cooking slowly crept into these Chinese dishes over the years. That is unitll now! The second thing I learned is that these is a lot more going on in the Far East than Moo Goo Gai Pan. There are all kinds of delicious Asian foods other than Chinese. Asian food also incompasses Japanese foods as well as Thai. These types of food were introduced over the past few years by Kosher restaurants, but whoever thought of making it in their own kitchen? For me and many others, Chinese was another word for takeout in most people's vocabulary.
That was until recently when the mother daughter duo of Shifrah Devorah Witt and Zipporah Malka Heller released their acclaimed book, The Complete Asian Kosher Cookbook. This mother daughter team were already Asian food fanatics when seventeen years ago they adopted a Kosher lifestyle. No longer able to frequent their favorite Asian Restaurants in China Town and no longer able to call Thai take out the dinner of choice, they had to learn to make it themselves. And oh how they succeeded! Next step was to make an Asian Kosher Cookbook to share their secrets with you and me. Now not only can you easily make the tastiest Asian recipes you'll ever have but you can even serve them for Shabbos!
This cookbook is a unique combination of authentic Asian food, covering Chinese, Japaneese, Thai, Philipino, Southeast Asian, and Indian cusine. The project was started when Shifrah Devorah gave birth to her first child and thus the underlying goal when creating the recipes was to have both amazing food and not spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
