Marvelous Tofu
Subject: Taste great, very healthy, and low cost
 
T O F U  

Tofu is a marvelous food made from soybeans, but is far easier to digest than soybeans.   Tofu is very nutritious -- low in fat, high in protein and does not contain cholesterol.   Therefore, it is also a great food on the menu for dieters .   In spite of the many advantages of eating Tofu, a high protein food, it should be eaten in moderation like other high protein foods.  Researchers have found that it is not beneficial to go overboard on protein as people used to think in the previous  "meat and potatoes" generation.  It's better to follow a well balanced diet with lots of grains and complex carbohydrates, a variety of vegetables and fruits as well as some protein. This way you get a variety of vitamins and minerals from a varied selection of food and tofu can be used in place of animal protein which has more fat, and more calories.     

Tofu  has been used in China as an important source of protein for two thousand years and in Japan for 1000 years.  It contains even more protein than chicken  and the same amount as is in about 5 ounces of hamburger. Yet, Tofu has much less calories and lower in cost than either of them.   Tofu contains one-fortieth the amount of  pesticide of meat.  

Tofu by itself is bland in taste, but it will take on the taste of the other foods it is cooked with.


Tofu is especiallly good with sauteed onions and should be prepared with Tamari soy sauce, to take away the bland taste.  It can be used in main dishes or even as a betweem meal snack instead  of rich high calorie food which are low in nutritional value.  You will find the preparation of Tofu to be very versatile.  It can be prepared to taste like cheese cake (parve), ice  ceam, chop suey and even meat -- you name it.  Some of us need to try it once or twice  to acquire a taste for this marvelous parve product.
