As a kid I never liked gefilte fish. After getting married, I tried my mother-in-law Aida's version and absolutely loved the sauce. I love it more on the chagim than on Pesach, because I love to sop up the sauce with challah.
She grew up in Mexico and I think that inspired the tomato sauce.
Several medium onions - sliced thin
3 lge cans Sweet Gefilte Fish
2 cans tomato sauce (plain, with nothing added) 8 oz. each
2 Cans water
handful of dry bay leaves - ± ½ dozen
handful of peppercorns (big hand full)
heaping ¾ C of sugar - or to taste
salt - to taste
little bit of white pepper
parboiled carrots - sliced on diagonal
